Bahamas Detox Juices

DSCN3152some of the most popular Gracious Living juices from the 10 Day Detoxification & Juice Fast Retreat at the Sivananda Yoga Retreat in the Bahamas. Spring Detox & Juice Fast  is April 23-30, 2013. start planning! www.sivanandabahamas.org

Focus more on the veggies, use apples just enough to sweeten slightly and just use red beets just to give it a red colour (don’t overdo it as it will be to high in sugar), ginger to taste, and lemons give it a nice citrus tang. If your juicer is good you can juice the entire lemon, peel and all! (I like Breville juicers.)

And if you can, buy organic, so that your juices are more nutritious, taste better, better for the environment, and better for detoxing your blood and internal organs.

Juices should be had on an empty stomach away from food. Wait 15-30 min before eating.

“Skin Brushing for Detoxification” in Sweat Equity Magazine

by Grace Van Berkum, R.H.N.

always an honour to be a part of awesome Sweat Equity Magazine,

Jan/Feb 2013,  page 44:

18a.Beauty

The skin plays a vital role in ridding the body of toxins and impurities. Dry skin brushing is one of the best techniques to open up the pores of the skin, and to stimulate and detoxify the lymphatic system.  Skin brushing, a technique that goes back thousands of years, may be one the best ways to treat your skin today. It is done by gently brushing dry skin and is used to clean, stimulate and exfoliate the skin. Instead of the standard cup of coffee or tea, try starting out the day as soon as you jump out of bed with an invigorating three to four minutes of dry skin brushing. Once you do it, you will be amazed at how addicting this beneficial habit can actually be!

Did you know the skin releases a pound of waste each day and will be the first organ to show symptoms of imbalance or toxicity?  Few people realize that the skin is our body’s largest organ and an important avenue for oxygen and nourishment to enter the body as well as a means for the body to eliminate accumulated toxins.Screen Shot 2013-02-13 at 10.17.31 PM

If toxins are unable to escape through the skin they will either be stored in fat cells, contributing to cellulite and other fatty deposits, or they will be re-circulated back into the blood stream, overworking the kidneys, liver and other detox organs. Thus a seemingly simple and easy therapy like dry skin brushing can have a huge overall impact on your whole body health and yes, it helps to reduce cellulite!

How to Use Your Dry Skin Brush

Look for a dry brush at your local health food store. Make sure it has natural bristles (as opposed to nylon or other synthetics) and a long handle so you can reach all those hard-to-get-places on your body. You can get an inexpensive small complexion skin brush for your face, and a long handled larger brush for your entire body. You want to start off very gently for the first couple weeks until your skin gets used to it.  If there are patches of eczema, skin eruptions, or any other skin condition, avoid brushing the affected areas.

  1. Brush your dry body before you shower or bathe, preferably in the morning.
  2. Start at your feet and always brush toward your heart. Use brisk circular motions or long, even strokes.
  3. Brush all the way up your legs, then over your abdomen, buttocks, and back. If you have cellulite on your hips and thighs, concentrate their a little longer. To help dissolve cellulite, brush for 10 minutes daily for several months.
  4. Brush lightly on sensitive areas like breasts and more firmly on areas like soles of the feet.
  5. When you reach your arms, begin at your fingers and brush up your arms, toward your heart. Brush your shoulders and chest down, always toward your heart.

Screen Shot 2013-02-13 at 10.17.07 PMYou can be done in as little as a few minutes. Finish with a shower to wash away dead skin cells. Now that your skin is tingly and smooth, massage natural, chemical-free plant oils into your skin such as coconut, almond, sesame, avocado, olive or cacoa butter. (see part 2, BEAUTIFUL SKIN TIPS: click here.)

It’s an invigorating way to start the day!

Benefits of dry skin brushing

  • stimulates the lymphatic system
  • cleans toxins from the lymphatic system
  • helps digestion
  • stimulates circulation
  • increases cell renewal
  • strengthens the immune system
  • aids blood cleansing
  • tightens the skin
  • removes dead skin layers and other debris collected in its pores
  • clear complexion
  • helps to fight cellulite by breaking down fat cells

TIPS FOR BEAUTIFUL SKIN by Grace Van Berkum, R.H.N.

in Jan/Feb 2013 Sweat Equity Magazine, page 44.

18a.Beauty

1.  Use chemical free products.  So you are reading labels and paying more attention to the foods you eat, but what about the products you put on your skin that are directly absorbed by the body? Illnesses such as cancer, infertility, allergies, organ toxicity, immune toxicity, neurotoxicity, and obesity have been linked to the increasing use of toxic ingredients in our bath and body care products, shampoos, household cleaners and cosmetics that we absorb via the skin. When we use these products that contain these compounds, our hormonal balance is thrown off. When our hormonal balance is thrown off, our skin, as well as the rest of our body is affected (i.e. acne, PMS, depression, anxiety, fatigue, weight gain, migraines, thyroid issues, endometriosis, polycystic ovaries, infertility, miscarriage, and even breast cancer.)

Keep it simple, read labels just like food labels, and if you don’t know what it says, don’t put it on your skin. If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin!  Look for ingredients you can read and pronounce, such as almond, sesame, avocado, olive, cacoa butter, shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil, which are natural products from the earth and smell amazing.  My personal favourite?  Organic coconut oil on my skin and hair! No chemicals, easily absorbed, moisturizing, lasts a long time, and better for the environment.

Stay away from parabens, synthetic fragrances, and pthalates. People are starting to become more aware that the proper functioning of the skin can be blocked by excessive use of toxic cosmetics and affect their overall health, and there are many companies out there these days that make natural skin care.

A fantastic resource for smart shopping is the Skin Deep Cosmetic Database. You can search thousands of products by brand name and get a safety rating that includes information on which ingredients in that product are toxic. Check it out at www.cosmeticsdatabase.com.

2.  What you put in your mouth affects your skin.

Your skin is a reflection of what is going on inside your body.  A healthy diet can help you look and feel your best. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. Make sure to consume lots of berries, apples, bell peppers, and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and cabbage. These foods are high in nutrients beneficial for the skin, the immune system and the entire body, and are also high in fiber needed for detoxification and elimination. Chronic constipation will affect skin integrity. Dark green leafy vegetables contain chlorophyl essential for oxygenating the body and boosting complexion. Eat foods like avocados, coconut oil, nuts, seeds, and hemp products which have good fats needed for beautiful skin health. And finally, proper hydration will give you a glow that no cream can.

3.  Manage stress.

Chronic stress can make your skin more sensitive and trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. To encourage healthy skin and a healthy mind, take steps to manage your stress. Honor your boundaries, speak your truth rather than letting things build up, respect rest time, and take time to enjoy your life and your loved ones.  Exercise, do yoga, breathe, and meditate to center yourself and recharge. Not only will this help complexion , but you will also look happier which is true beauty.

Gracious Living favourite stress reduction practices: yoga, meditation, deep breathing, chillin’ in nature.

7 ways to Enhance Immune System

 By Grace Van Berkum R.H.N.

Sweat Equity Magazine, pg. 26

Inside your body there is an amazing protection mechanism called the immune system. It is designed to defend you against millions of bacteria, microbes, viruses, toxins and parasites that would love to invade your body. Environmental factors like diet and nutrition, stress, sleep deprivation, pollution, toxins, obesity, smoking, and alcohol can overwhelm your body and lead to low immunity.  Frequent illnesses can lead to more serious imbalances and diseases of the body over time.  Look after your body and it will look after you Your greatest wealth is health!

1. Stay hydrated. Drinking 10-12 cups of clean water per day will help flush out toxins from the body.  If you are not getting enough water, toxins accumulate in the body not only diminishing immune system health, but also causing depletion of energy.  Start every morning with fresh lemon squeezed in room temperature or warm water, to help boost the immune system and detoxify.

2. Eat foods that support immune system health.  Eat fresh, natural foods and stay away from chemical-laden, processed foods which end up depressing the immune system and over burdening the liver. Avoid refined sugars which robs the body of vitamins and minerals resulting in a weakened immune system.  Artificial sweeteners are absolute no no’s, too, as they are neuro-toxins, damaging to the body and health. Eat foods high in omega 3 fatty acids which are paramount for cell health, reducing inflammation in the body, and prevent DNA damage. Omega 3 rich foods include nuts and seeds, especially walnuts, flax seeds, chia seeds, seaweeds, hemp seeds and powders, spirulina, and chorella. And we all know, foods high in Vitamin C support immune system health. Most of us turn to citrus as our go-to source for vitamin C but other high vitamin C foods include strawberries, cherries, papaya, kiwi, bell peppers, guava, and pomegranate.  Incorporate fresh garlic and fresh onions in your dishes.  Fresh garlic is nature’s most powerful antibiotic.   Drinking ginger tea helps relieve congestion.

3.  Take high quality supplements in addition to eating well.  Supplements are insurance that the body is getting everything it needs, especially during times of stress.  A high potency multi vitamin and mineral, high in B vitamins, Vitamin C,  Zinc, and Magnesium help to keep the body healthy.  Probiotics improves intestinal flora (good bacteria) and boosts immune system.

4.  Move your body. Sweat!  Skin is the biggest eliminative organ in the body and sweating equals toxin release. Movement increases lymphatic circulation and circulation helps with toxin removal, which means better immune system health. You need to exercise to stimulate your body, growth hormone, and cell mitochondria.

5.  De-stress with yoga, meditation, and deep breathing.  Stress increases stress hormones in the body which can wear us out, physically and mentally. By employing techniques such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises, levels of stress decrease as the nervous system relaxes.  Studies have shown that individuals who consistently dedicate time towards stress management through mind body techniques get sick less.

6.  Rest and sleep. This is just as important as all the other points. Honor your body and give it time to recuperate and recharge.  Don’t overwork yourself or repeatedly push yourself beyond your capacity. This is taxing on the nervous system, the immune system, and overall health and well-being.  You need to get enough sleep for detoxification, recovery, and to repair your body, cells, and cell DNA.  Going to bed the same time everyday helps to keep the body in a healthy rhythm.

7. Love yourself.  Studies have shown that negative self talk and self debilitating thoughts increase stress in the body, acidify the body and depress our immune systems. Positive affirmations and positive thinking help to increase our cell health, immune health, and raise our vibrations.  When we stop the negative chatter and replace it with loving statements and gratitude, we increase our overall health, raise our vibrations, and become happier.  Studies have shown that happier people get sick less!  With awareness and practice we can change the way we think. Just like anything else, to become good at something takes practice.
