TIPS FOR BEAUTIFUL SKIN by Grace Van Berkum, R.H.N.

1.  Use chemical free products.  So you are reading labels and paying more attention to the foods you eat, but what about the products you put on your skin that are directly absorbed by the body? Illnesses such as cancer, infertility, allergies, organ toxicity, immune toxicity, neurotoxicity, and obesity have been linked to the increasing use of toxic ingredients in our bath and body care products, shampoos, household cleaners and cosmetics that we absorb via the skin. When we use these products that contain these compounds, our hormonal balance is thrown off. When our hormonal balance is thrown off, our skin, as well as the rest of our body is affected (i.e. acne, PMS, depression, anxiety, fatigue, weight gain, migraines, thyroid issues, endometriosis, polycystic ovaries, infertility, miscarriage, and even breast cancer.)

Keep it simple, read labels just like food labels, and if you don’t know what it says, don’t put it on your skin. If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin!  Look for ingredients you can read and pronounce, such as almond, sesame, avocado, olive, cacoa butter, shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil, which are natural products from the earth and smell amazing.  My personal favourite?  Organic coconut oil on my skin and hair! No chemicals, easily absorbed, moisturizing, lasts a long time, and better for the environment.

Stay away from parabens, synthetic fragrances, and pthalates. People are starting to become more aware that the proper functioning of the skin can be blocked by excessive use of toxic cosmetics and affect their overall health, and there are many companies out there these days that make natural skin care.

A fantastic resource for smart shopping is the Skin Deep Cosmetic Database. You can search thousands of products by brand name and get a safety rating that includes information on which ingredients in that product are toxic. Check it out at www.cosmeticsdatabase.com.

2.  What you put in your mouth affects your skin.

Your skin is a reflection of what is going on inside your body.  A healthy diet can help you look and feel your best. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. Make sure to consume lots of berries, apples, bell peppers, and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and cabbage. These foods are high in nutrients beneficial for the skin, the immune system and the entire body, and are also high in fiber needed for detoxification and elimination. Chronic constipation will affect skin integrity. Dark green leafy vegetables contain chlorophyl essential for oxygenating the body and boosting complexion. Eat foods like avocados, coconut oil, nuts, seeds, and hemp products which have good fats needed for beautiful skin health. And finally, proper hydration will give you a glow that no cream can.

3.  Manage stress.

Chronic stress can make your skin more sensitive and trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. To encourage healthy skin and a healthy mind, take steps to manage your stress. Honor your boundaries, speak your truth rather than letting things build up, respect rest time, and take time to enjoy your life and your loved ones.  Exercise, do yoga, breathe, and meditate to center yourself and recharge. Not only will this help complexion , but you will also look happier which is true beauty.

7 ways to Enhance Immune System

 By Grace Van Berkum R.H.N.

Sweat Equity Magazine, pg. 26

Inside your body there is an amazing protection mechanism called the immune system. It is designed to defend you against millions of bacteria, microbes, viruses, toxins and parasites that would love to invade your body. Environmental factors like diet and nutrition, stress, sleep deprivation, pollution, toxins, obesity, smoking, and alcohol can overwhelm your body and lead to low immunity.  Frequent illnesses can lead to more serious imbalances and diseases of the body over time.  Look after your body and it will look after you Your greatest wealth is health!

1. Stay hydrated. Drinking 10-12 cups of clean water per day will help flush out toxins from the body.  If you are not getting enough water, toxins accumulate in the body not only diminishing immune system health, but also causing depletion of energy.  Start every morning with fresh lemon squeezed in room temperature or warm water, to help boost the immune system and detoxify.

2. Eat foods that support immune system health.  Eat fresh, natural foods and stay away from chemical-laden, processed foods which end up depressing the immune system and over burdening the liver. Avoid refined sugars which robs the body of vitamins and minerals resulting in a weakened immune system.  Artificial sweeteners are absolute no no’s, too, as they are neuro-toxins, damaging to the body and health. Eat foods high in omega 3 fatty acids which are paramount for cell health, reducing inflammation in the body, and prevent DNA damage. Omega 3 rich foods include nuts and seeds, especially walnuts, flax seeds, chia seeds, seaweeds, hemp seeds and powders, spirulina, and chorella. And we all know, foods high in Vitamin C support immune system health. Most of us turn to citrus as our go-to source for vitamin C but other high vitamin C foods include strawberries, cherries, papaya, kiwi, bell peppers, guava, and pomegranate.  Incorporate fresh garlic and fresh onions in your dishes.  Fresh garlic is nature’s most powerful antibiotic.   Drinking ginger tea helps relieve congestion.

3.  Take high quality supplements in addition to eating well.  Supplements are insurance that the body is getting everything it needs, especially during times of stress.  A high potency multi vitamin and mineral, high in B vitamins, Vitamin C,  Zinc, and Magnesium help to keep the body healthy.  Probiotics improves intestinal flora (good bacteria) and boosts immune system.

4.  Move your body. Sweat!  Skin is the biggest eliminative organ in the body and sweating equals toxin release. Movement increases lymphatic circulation and circulation helps with toxin removal, which means better immune system health. You need to exercise to stimulate your body, growth hormone, and cell mitochondria.

5.  De-stress with yoga, meditation, and deep breathing.  Stress increases stress hormones in the body which can wear us out, physically and mentally. By employing techniques such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises, levels of stress decrease as the nervous system relaxes.  Studies have shown that individuals who consistently dedicate time towards stress management through mind body techniques get sick less.

6.  Rest and sleep. This is just as important as all the other points. Honor your body and give it time to recuperate and recharge.  Don’t overwork yourself or repeatedly push yourself beyond your capacity. This is taxing on the nervous system, the immune system, and overall health and well-being.  You need to get enough sleep for detoxification, recovery, and to repair your body, cells, and cell DNA.  Going to bed the same time everyday helps to keep the body in a healthy rhythm.

7. Love yourself.  Studies have shown that negative self talk and self debilitating thoughts increase stress in the body, acidify the body and depress our immune systems. Positive affirmations and positive thinking help to increase our cell health, immune health, and raise our vibrations.  When we stop the negative chatter and replace it with loving statements and gratitude, we increase our overall health, raise our vibrations, and become happier.  Studies have shown that happier people get sick less!  With awareness and practice we can change the way we think. Just like anything else, to become good at something takes practice.

lessons from my cancer-free dad

my dad.

he never ceases to amaze me.

“after the doctors said his cancer was so bad and only had 10 months left to live, he totally changed his lifestyle and his nutrition determined to prove them wrong and is now alive, cancer-free, and happy 17 years later! then a couple of years ago after our dog got sick with epilepsy and the doctors said it was only going to get worse and kill her, it dawned on him that this sounded eerily familiar. so, he started making healthy, homemade dog food and cured her epilepsy! she has never had an attack again since my dad started feeding her nutrient dense foods to help her heal! now my dad has done it again! his bald spot is growing hair and nearly gone! YEP! at 79 years old! amazing! time and time again he inspires and shows me that healing, (and anything) is possible with proper food and proper state of mind. that’s next level living folks…and next level anti-aging!!! thanks dad!”

so i typed the above as my facebook status a few days ago and got over 200 responses from people expressing love & support! over 200!! makes me happy to know that people are listening and paying attention and realizing that we do indeed have the ability to change our bodies and lives. this influx of positivity & curiosity has inspired me to write this short post. when i get back from St. Lucia next month, i will interview my dad for all my blog readers. hope there is something here that ignites something inside of you.

Lessons my Dad has taught me from his actions and experiences:

1) you know your body best. you know what’s right for it, you know what’s wrong for it. just because someone says something doesn’t mean it is true. just because someone says you are going to die within 10 months, DOESN’T MEAN IT’S DESTINED TO HAPPEN!!

2) listen to your body. pay attention! what is it telling you right now this very second?  think about that. and what can you do about it?

3) the mind is a powerful mother f*%#*-er!  use it/train it to make you flourish. BECAUSE YOU CAN!  don’t know how? explore breathing exercises, meditation, positive affirmations, visualization techniques, meditative yoga. it’s your journey. figure out what works for you and makes you calmer and stronger. and more alive.

4) dogs need real, nutrient dense, live foods, too! not just humans! over time chemicals and preservatives will make them sick, just like us.

5)  life is short. you blink your eyes and your dad is nearly 80. you blink your eyes and people you know start dying, young and old. this is the real thing folks. stop wasting time. live your truth. whatever is sitting there in your great big heart that you are too scared to do, or too scared to say, will eat away at you! only you know what that is. get over it.  in the famous words of nike….just do it.  start the process.

6) if you don’t love yourself, you won’t find the love that you are seeking. loving yourself comes first. and when you truly learn to love yourself, this will affect all areas of your life in a positive, amazing way…not just relationships, but work, too.

7) slow down. give 100% in all that you do. then you will find the beauty and joy in things. then you will start noticing all the beauty & love  around you in your life, including the small things.  i’m talking about those things that you normally don’t pay attention to. when you slow down and stay immersed fully in everything you do, life suddenly becomes a gift. the complaining (to yourself AND to others) fades away and joy takes over. and guess what? then you start to smile and laugh more. and then guess what? you start to exude positive energy. and then guess what? you start to attract positive things to you.  well well well. this is the power of gratitude. it leads to abundance.

8)  my Gracious Living business motto (and life motto) is: “you are what you eat.  you are what you think.  GRACIOUS LIVING”. and as i have sat here right now typing out this blog post, i have realized that it encapsulates everything my dad has taught me. i have never realized that before. coooool! so in essence everything that i have learned to heal myself, and to help heal others, has been inspired by my dad. i love my dad.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.

you are what you eat.  you are what you think.  GRACIOUS LIVING.

i love Nicaragua

today i went for a run along the beach.

this is where i run a few times a week.

the beach is long and beautiful.

besides a few surfers, no one is ever on it.

UNBELIEVABLE!!

i crank my ipod and sing at the top of my lungs.

today i ran and sang daft punk.  LOUD!

made me giggle.

no one could hear me except for the monkies, cows, piggies, and horses.

it is moments like this that i feel so grateful to be alive.

I LOVE LIFE.
