TIPS FOR BEAUTIFUL SKIN by Grace Van Berkum, R.H.N.

in Jan/Feb 2013 Sweat Equity Magazine, page 44.

1.  Use chemical free products.  So you are reading labels and paying more attention to the foods you eat, but what about the products you put on your skin that are directly absorbed by the body? Illnesses such as cancer, infertility, allergies, organ toxicity, immune toxicity, neurotoxicity, and obesity have been linked to the increasing use of toxic ingredients in our bath and body care products, shampoos, household cleaners and cosmetics that we absorb via the skin. When we use these products that contain these compounds, our hormonal balance is thrown off. When our hormonal balance is thrown off, our skin, as well as the rest of our body is affected (i.e. acne, PMS, depression, anxiety, fatigue, weight gain, migraines, thyroid issues, endometriosis, polycystic ovaries, infertility, miscarriage, and even breast cancer.)

Keep it simple, read labels just like food labels, and if you don’t know what it says, don’t put it on your skin. If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin!  Look for ingredients you can read and pronounce, such as almond, sesame, avocado, olive, cacoa butter, shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil, which are natural products from the earth and smell amazing.  My personal favourite?  Organic coconut oil on my skin and hair! No chemicals, easily absorbed, moisturizing, lasts a long time, and better for the environment.

Stay away from parabens, synthetic fragrances, and pthalates. People are starting to become more aware that the proper functioning of the skin can be blocked by excessive use of toxic cosmetics and affect their overall health, and there are many companies out there these days that make natural skin care.

A fantastic resource for smart shopping is the Skin Deep Cosmetic Database. You can search thousands of products by brand name and get a safety rating that includes information on which ingredients in that product are toxic. Check it out at www.cosmeticsdatabase.com.

2.  What you put in your mouth affects your skin.

Your skin is a reflection of what is going on inside your body.  A healthy diet can help you look and feel your best. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. Make sure to consume lots of berries, apples, bell peppers, and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and cabbage. These foods are high in nutrients beneficial for the skin, the immune system and the entire body, and are also high in fiber needed for detoxification and elimination. Chronic constipation will affect skin integrity. Dark green leafy vegetables contain chlorophyl essential for oxygenating the body and boosting complexion. Eat foods like avocados, coconut oil, nuts, seeds, and hemp products which have good fats needed for beautiful skin health. And finally, proper hydration will give you a glow that no cream can.

3.  Manage stress.

Chronic stress can make your skin more sensitive and trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. To encourage healthy skin and a healthy mind, take steps to manage your stress. Honor your boundaries, speak your truth rather than letting things build up, respect rest time, and take time to enjoy your life and your loved ones.  Exercise, do yoga, breathe, and meditate to center yourself and recharge. Not only will this help complexion , but you will also look happier which is true beauty.

Gracious Living favourite stress reduction practices: yoga, meditation, deep breathing, chillin’ in nature.

little gurus everywhere!

When we approach children with the awareness that they can teach us, we automatically become more present ourselves.  www.dailyom.com

As grown-ups, we often approach children with ideas about what we can teach them about this life to which they have so recently arrived. It’s true that we have important information to convey, but children are here to teach us just as much as we are here to teach them. They are so new to the world and far less burdened with preconceived notions about the people, situations, and objects they encounter. They do not avoid people on the basis of appearance, nor do they regard shoes as having only one function. They can be fascinated for half an hour with a pot and a lid, and they are utterly unself-conscious in their emotional expressions. They live their lives fully immersed in the present moment, seeing everything with the open-mindedness born of unknowing.

This enables them to inhabit a state of spontaneity, curiosity, and pure excitement about the world that we, as adults, have a hard time accessing. Yet almost every spiritual path calls us to rediscover this way of seeing. In this sense, children are truly our gurus.

When we approach children with the awareness that they are our teachers, we automatically become more present ourselves. We have to be more present when we follow, looking and listening, responding to their lead. We don’t lapse so easily into the role of the director of activities, surrendering instead to having no agenda at all. As we allow our children to determine the flow of play, they pull us deeper into the mystery of the present moment. In this magical place, we become innocent again, not knowing what will happen next and remembering how to let go and flow.

Since we must also embody the role of loving guide to our children, they teach us how to transition gracefully from following to leading and back again. In doing so, we learn to dance with our children in the present moment, shifting and adjusting as we direct the flow from pretending to be kittens wearing shoes on our heads to making sure everyone is fed and bathed.

Don’t Worry, Be Happy: Meditation For Stress Relief

Big shout out to guest writer, Allison Brooks,  who is fan of alternative therapies and traditional medicine and likes to spread the word about their effectiveness.

Don’t Worry Be Happy:  Mindfulness Meditation becomes mainstream to stop stress.

The use of mediation is becoming a popular way for people to combat everyday stress and relax. Since stress and worry lead to much more serious issues, it is important to pause and simply enjoy the moment of “now”. This form of mindfulness and self-realization are timeless practices of Buddhist and Indian yoga traditions and now scientific truth helps support their claims.

As avid followers know, the benefits of meditation are great and have an impact on mind-body health. But now researchers of the Justus Liebig University and Harvard Medical School suggest that mindfulness meditation can improve immune system function, reduced blood pressure, and enhanced cognitive function. For some time these facts have been known and health-care providers actually suggested to patients to adopt a mind-body therapy to help with the pain and stress of conventional treatments. But now, studies of existing data show why mindfulness meditation produce the effects they do.

Using a framework approach to the understand the mechanics, researchers indentified four key components of mindfulness: body awareness, attentions regulation, sense of self, and emotion regulation.  These four ideals work together to help the person identify and combat any mental and physiological effects due to stress. Since the four components are closely connected, the focus on one can ultimately affect another, and then cause a chain reaction. This is important to clinicians to help identify the root of the problem and tailor a unique mindfulness program for the patient.

Researchers of the mindfulness effects on the body and mind hope that the news will spread even more into society and make people want to use mindfulness meditation to facilitate change in health or everyday life. Many meditation facilities around the country have established specific programs to teach how to identify problems and form a program around them, and even have group sessions. Researchers hope this form of meditation can be molded to help patients deal with the pain and stresses of medical treatment.
Conventional therapies for chronic conditions or cancer, are harsh on the body and can lead to a great deal of stress. The use of a mindfulness meditation program could help fight against symptoms of treatment and lead to an easier road to recovery.

“Each meditation session is a journey of discovery to understand the basic truth of who we are. In the beginning the most important lesson of meditation is seeing the speed of the mind. But the meditation tradition says that mind doesn’t have to be this way: it just hasn’t been worked with.”
